Have been slowly playing my way through FFXII: Revenant Wings for maybe four months now. Am somewhere around 70% completion at this point, but I'll probably go back and do a bunch of leveling before the next major set of missions. I'm really not feeling this battle system, especially on the DS.

Vaan is still a dork.
Basch is big woobie and AWESOME, omg ♥♥♥ (Paramina Rift, you'll know it when you see it)
Balthier, on the other hand, is major bastard asshole. I mean, wow.

I sort of get the feeling from fandom that this is one of them black sheep little sibling games whose existence nobody really likes to acknowledge?

John Corigliano is fantastic. Circus Maximus is fantastic.

Being the only person one's age who is attending a concert in the company of one's parents rather than with peers like 75% of the rest of the audience is decidedly not so fantastic.

Found applications for some job at SFO in my inbox today. Phone interview with Siemens tomorrow. Hopefully one of these will work out.

STILL ALIVE.

Still in Taiwan though. Have been getting hair cut. Have been getting panic attacks from working on The Thesis That Will Not End. Have also been bleeded dry by giant vampire monster mosquitoes, so may not be still alive for much longer.

Well...shit.

Also: piss, fuck, cunt, cocksucker, motherfucker, tits. Two of these I do not use, and a third only in reference to certain avians, but in honor of George Carlin I'm making an exception.

Comedy: where you tell the truth and people laugh at it. )

1:42 am - (knight-errant?)
iron man/iron maiden

This is Tony Stark, who bolts himself inside a metal shell, to fight dragons he helped unleash on the world.

This is Tony Stark, who returns home each time a little more bloodied; afterwards, he will be a little more scarred.

This is Tony Stark, and this is his penance: for his father, for his mentor, for himself.

------

Okay, so that last line is kind of poking at the edge of clich&eacc; to me, but anyway: I am somewhat surprised* that I cannot recall, as of yet, having seen anything that explores parallels between the Iron Man suit and things like cursed armor from Arthurian legend** and the iron maiden as an instrument of corporal mortification***. It's an amazing piece of hardware, but to me "invincible" rather implies not coming back from every mission with bullet holes and major artillery dents (and that being the least of the damage, as so any fics seem to imply, and at least the bits of comics-canon that I've read) and needing several rebuilds and/or upgrades and/or overhauls. And there's a squishy human inside.

If Tony Stark himself is what "Iron Man" refers to...well, for starters, there's alcohol.

Also: what are the biological/structural implications of punching a tin can through one's sternum? How is his ribcage staying un-collapsed? Haven't seen this addressed either.

Anyway.

*where surprised isn't exactly the right word - perhaps bemused?

**the one that comes to mind first is Gromer Somethingsomething from the Gawain and Ragnell story, but there's probably a bunch more who fit better.

***not being up on all the bizarre religious traditions of the world, I don't actually know if there is any record of this, or if it was just an instrument of torturing other people. See also: the Chokee.

Tony Stark == Mozart
Obadiah Stane == Salieri (as characterized in Amadeus)

yes?

I may be reading too much into the piano scene.

I...I mainlined Princess Tutu last night.

Dammit, who told them my weakness for Scheherezade? And Swan Lake - I mean, it's an anime based around ballet, so how could they not, but SWAN FREAKING LAKE. Things that make me go drippy on top of more things that make me go drippy.
